His career includes painting several portraits in 1980 at the portrait workshop of the Art Combine. In 1994, during a peaceful mission in Abkhazia’s Kodori Gorge, he was severely wounded by a penetrating bullet, an experience that later influenced his war-themed art, such as the painting “Twins.” From 2000 to 2022, Avalishvili held 37 solo exhibitions in Tbilisi at venues such as “Karavan-Sarai” (2000), “Library of the Parliament of Georgia” (2000), the “USA Embassy” (2000), and “Gallery Palace” (2022). He has created approximately 500 paintings (canvas, oil), with 15 of them located in Switzerland, England, and other countries.
His achievements and recognition include praise in 2000 from Alain Poret, Director of the Dumas Center, who stated, “This is high-class art.” In 2001, Humberto Amber, a photo expert from Marseille, included him in the top six leading Georgian artists. In 2003, Mikheil Kurdiani, President of the Rustaveli Society and “World Intellect” (1999), recognized Avalishvili as “Georgia’s best painter and worthy of the Louvre” (Newspaper “24 Saati”, 09.12.2003, article: “Impressionistic Colors…”). In 2006, the Director of Agora Gallery (New York) described his works as “Brilliant colours.”
In 2016, Yves Schumacher, Director of Zurich Museums, visited his home on the recommendation of renowned violinist Liana Isakadze, who admired his painting. In 2018, the Ambassador of France, Caspar Meinier, and his wife also visited his home. His painting “Tsneti Landscape” was selected at an exhibition of 500 Georgian artists at Zurab Tsereteli’s Museum in 2017. In 2025, he was awarded the Philippe Lampedusa Prize at an exhibition in Italy.
His rating in the “Unified Artistic Rating” (Russian) is “4b”.
