Coimbra, Portugal
“I want to be a free, independent artist, liberated from the worldviews of “I’ve seen it before”.
Rui’s work stands out for its use of very vivid yellows, blues, greens and reds in an imaginary world circumscribed and created by himself. The scenes and figures depicted create comic, critical or more realistic feelings and sometimes the viewer may think that the painting is a “comic book”. “Reinventing himself” is also one of his “brand images”: “Daring to take risks” is the challenge, creating a style is easy. He has passed through monochrome Abstractionism, Surrealism, Realism and other Phases. At the moment, he’s in Abstractionism. He always sees painting as a challenge and with honesty.
Rui Carreira was born in Angola. He has lived in Coimbra, Portugal, since 1974. As a child he began to draw and paint with passion. Rui has held several solo and group exhibitions in Coimbra, Faro, Porto, Sintra and Beira (Mozambique). He is represented in various private and public collections in Portugal and abroad.
