The Suffering Of Light | Thirty Years Of Photographs By Alex Webb With Afterword By Geoff Dyer

If you are going to purchase only one photography book by Alex Webb; this would be the book to buy. It is  very heavy and extra large. I have other books by Alex Webb, but this one is a nice overall representation of thirty years of his work.  The weight of the book is 4.7 lbs (hardcover) and the dimensions are 13.2″ X .9″ X 12.2″. (one large photograph per page) The publisher is Aperture. (2011) The book contains 204 pages of street photography depicting daily life, as well as photojournalism color images. Every single photograph is museum quality.

Alex Webb’s images lock in the viewer with rich colors and complex compositions. This is the type of photography that demands your full attention. I can spend a couple of minutes looking at a photo and then come back to the same image another time and find something I missed.  Serious photographers should study this book.

The Suffering of Light includes images from countries such as Haiti, Spain, Barbados,Grenada, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Cuba, Panama and Turkey. Rating is 10+ out of 10.

OUR CONCEPT

Written By Joelcy Kay – Curator

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY offers that personal experience as the individual has the opportunity to buy the art from the creator and by doing so a new event to remember is born. When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

WHY DISPLAY YOUR ART AT THE NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY?

The gallery is designed to connect the art seekers and collectors with artists directly. Deeds of War By James Nachtwey | Photography Book Recommendation

The work in this book immortalizes images of war, survival, struggles, and defiance.  The photographs bring us back to wars from the 1980s and is a historic representation of action on the ground.  Wars are bloody and full of death.  The images of the dead and partially decomposed bodies are raw; and they allow you to smell the stench.

From the streets of Bethlehem, and West Beirut, to the surreal image of parents strolling a toddler by a nearby truck on fire in Belfast, (page 58-59), one feels transported to the past and at a lost for words. The environmental portraits of civilians and the military personal from Nicaragua and San Salvador depicts apparent peace during their daily encounters.

There are also a few pages dedicated to religious content. The contrasting scene varies between clergy members ready to take off from a heavily armed helicopter in Guatemala City (91), to soldiers kneeling  and holding on to their guns in Nicaragua, and Muslims in Afghanistan placing their weapons between their legs during prayer.

My favorite image, page 25, is a portrait of two soldiers, Souk-el-Gharb, Lebanon, 1983.

The book also contains images from wars/conflicts in: Sinai, South Korea, Occupied West Bank 1988, Uganda, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Honduras, Sudan, India, Soviet Union and South Carolina in the USA, all images from the 1980s.

El Salvador By Larry Towell With An Introduction By Mark Danner | Photography Book Recommendation

The Salvadoran Civil War went on for over twelve years and killed more than 75,000 people between 1980 and 1992.

The book gives the reader an intimate look into the daily life in El Salvador, during the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s. In 1986, Larry Towell went to El Salvador and documented the civil war and aftermath for a decade.
Every photo tells a story of either simplicity, suffering, struggles, poverty, or death; with very few smiles. The black & white photographs are so close that the reader feels like they are immersed into the scene. You will find the captions for the 96 pages of photographs at the end of the book.
