Manuel Alvarez Bravo | Photographs and Memories | Photography Book Recommendation

This Aperture published book is a nice selection of Manuel Alvarez Bravo’s black and white daily life artistic photographs that took place in Mexico from the 1920’s though the 1990’s. Every photograph has strong impact and is museum quality. The portraits display raw emotion and I especially like the photo taken during the 1930’s of Frida Kahlo sitting and painting . Two historic top artists! The painter and the photographer taking her photo! (Page 59)  As Paul Stand  states on page 46, ” Manuel Alvarez Bravo’s work is rooted firmly in his love and compassionate understanding of his own country, its people, their problem and their needs.”  I totally agree!

ABOUT

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY is designed to connect art seekers and collectors with artists DIRECTLY.  The gallery is not a mall, but instead a collection of remarkable works of art that bring together artists and potential buyers.

Following Edge of Humanity Magazine‘s footsteps of publishing unparalleled content from artists and photographers worldwide, the NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY is on a mission to provide it’s viewers art that is unique and diverse.

OUR CONCEPT

Written By Joelcy Kay – Curator

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY offers that personal experience as the individual has the opportunity to buy the art from the creator and by doing so a new event to remember is born. When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

WHY DISPLAY YOUR ART AT THE NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY?

The gallery is designed to connect the art seekers and collectors with artists directly. We offer artists a COMMISSION FREE / CONTRACT FREE online platform to sell their creations and engage with their clients using portfolio pages that are engaging with large images and a dramatic black background.

Pete Turner African Journey | Photography Book Recommendation

Outstanding alive color photography that wakes me up when resting in my recliner. 206 pages of intense color images of Africa. Every so often, I love lighting my pipe, reaching for this book, sit back, relax, and slowly flip the pages. Pete Turner understands color and you will not be disappointed with the captivating photos in the book.

The photographs take place starting in 1959 when Pete was on a seven-month safari through Africa and continues on with photographs from 1960,1964, 1969, 1970,1974, 1984, and 1995.At the beginning of the book, there is a map that shows the areas he traveled in 1959. Some of the areas covered in the book include: Transkei region, South Africa, Swaziland, Lake Manyara, Tanganika (Tanzania), Valley of the Kings, Egypt, Ndebele, South Africa, Sossusveli, Namibia, Amboseli, Kenya, Egypt, Krueger Park, South Africa, Victoria Falls, Rhodesia (Zambia), South Africa, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, Khartoum, Sudan, Giza, Egypt, and the Nubian Desert, Sudan. The subjects include: animals, portraits, buildings, plants, roads, everyday life of people, environment, landscapes, close-ups of native jewelry, etc. If you love Africa then you will love this book. The text and photographs are by the photographer, book design by Massimo Vignelli, and an introduction by Gordon Parks.

Beirut | A City In Crisis By Don McCullin | Photography Book Recommendation

Beirut A City In Crisis is a gritty black and white photography documentation of Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War. The book is divided into an introduction by the photographer and two other sections titled :1976 Civil War and 1982 Madness Heaped Upon Madness.

The conflict zone images were taken up close and are powerful. Examples of the photographs include fighters, injured people, dead bodies, as well as the people struggling to survive in the war zone. One image in particular shows a women who discovers her family has been killed in a building which just collapsed after Israeli bombing. (Page 81) This photo stayed seared into my brain for some time after looking at it in the book. Her expression is chilling. Every image displays raw emotion that the photographer witnessed and recorded with his camera. Highly collectible!

A Way Into India By Raghubir Singh | Photography Book Recommendation

India sucks you in and does not let go.

Massive sensory overload!

Raghubir Singh’s book ‘A way Into India’ follows a photographic theme which includes part or all of the Ambassador car in each frame. The photos are taken from inside the car or out and includes 124 pages of daily Indian life. Colors pop and the composition is superb. Every photograph displays layer upon layer of  interwinding parts that tell a story. This is professional street/candid photography at its finest. Highly recommended!

Braziliangels By Joaquim Nabuco | Photography Book Recommendation

Braziliangels is an outstanding representation of Brazilian females. If you have visited the country then you have already witnessed the beauty and sensuality of Brazilian ladies.  This large size hardcover book is jam- packed with artistic photographs of gorgeous nude women. The environmental portraits are indoors, at the beach, jungle, etc. All the women have excellent bodies and the photographer does a superb job of displaying the models in a classy manner. Strong eye contact! 100% comfortable in front of the camera! I’m an ass man and not disappointed. Braziliangels is a must for the erotic and general photography book collector.

Photography Book Recommendation | Native By Mona Kuhn

‘Native’ elegantly portrays the raw natural beauty of the jungles and of the Brazilian people. The book explores the wild organic side of Brazil while at the same time the photographer gives the viewer erotic, simplistic indoor, intimate, comfortable, portraits of men and women. The jungle images interwoven throughout the book convey the theme of the nude body and nature. The photographer perfectly displays the sensuality of the Brazilians.

The Suffering Of Light | Thirty Years Of Photographs By Alex Webb With Afterword By Geoff Dyer

If you are going to purchase only one photography book by Alex Webb; this would be the book to buy. It is  very heavy and extra large. I have other books by Alex Webb, but this one is a nice overall representation of thirty years of his work.  The weight of the book is 4.7 lbs (hardcover) and the dimensions are 13.2″ X .9″ X 12.2″. (one large photograph per page) The publisher is Aperture. (2011) The book contains 204 pages of street photography depicting daily life, as well as photojournalism color images. Every single photograph is museum quality.

Alex Webb’s images lock in the viewer with rich colors and complex compositions. This is the type of photography that demands your full attention. I can spend a couple of minutes looking at a photo and then come back to the same image another time and find something I missed.  Serious photographers should study this book.

The Suffering of Light includes images from countries such as Haiti, Spain, Barbados,Grenada, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Cuba, Panama and Turkey. Rating is 10+ out of 10.

For book details see amazon.com below.
