Mutes is César de Barros Amorim (b. 1976, France). He lives and works in Arcos de Valdevez, north of Portugal, where he practices his art of painting. Self-taught, he has developed his own artistic language over time, grounded in observation, experimentation, and a deep need for expression.
His work takes Cubism as its starting point only to deconstruct it, freeing form from rigidity and transforming the outline into a space for breath and movement. From this process emerges DesCubismo Contornismo, an open approach where destruction and reconstruction are parts of the same creative gesture. The line functions as structure and color as the emotional body, in an unstable balance between discipline and instinct.
His practice is intuitive and physical: he draws, erases, fragments, and reorganizes, accepting error and imperfection as essential elements of the process. The figures often appear unfinished, tense, human, inviting the viewer to a slow and sensitive gaze.
Since 2004, he has exhibited regularly, with over 260 exhibitions to his credit, including 14 international ones. His work is included in collections and extends to the creation of murals, artistic objects, album covers, books, and editorial projects. He is the creator of 12 murals in Portugal and one mural in Canada, part of the Vivid Art Fest 2025.
Since 2012, he has been a mentor and curator of the quadrennial Arcoz’Arte exhibition. His career has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Art Prize Picasso (Paris, 2016), an Honorable Mention from the Brick Lane Gallery (London, 2017), and the Creativity Medal from the Von Zeidler Art Gallery (Berlin, 2021), among many other achievements in the world of painting.
