Pavlovsky Design

We are the Pavlovsky family: mathematically trained metal designer Alexander, artist, art critic, writer Nikita/Onda and graphic designer and illustrator Anastasia. Dad, son and mom.

We decided to work as a team in January 2020. We believe that with a good understanding, the difference in our creative background gives an original result.

We create paintings, panels and objects at the crossroads of art and handcrafted design. Each of us develops his own theme, without limiting the creative freedom of the other.

Metal, volume, technology

I’m Alexander, a metal designer. I would like to give a second, completely new life in art and space to what belonged to the outgoing industrial age: pieces of old metal, fragments of time. I’m interested in changing the purpose of things, changing their destiny, saving them from melting down, because not only the object itself is saved, but also the story of its life, the story of hard work on the ground or in the factory.

Therefore, I explore the possibility of a complete transformation of life and destiny through a change of form and filling with new meanings while maintaining background.

I work with metal in different techniques, trying to preserve and transform the existing features in the selected artifacts.

 Colors and associations

I’m Anastasia, graphic designer, artist. I love fairy tales, history, things with history and their new life. I see an undoubted analogy in the period of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance with the present moment – both then and now there is a rethinking of the old ethics and the creation of a new one. Now it’s just a new turn of the spiral: first we talked about God and the dual nature of man, now we talk about humanism, freedom, animal rights and the soul of artificial intelligence.

This is why my works have planar styles, references to previous eras.

I am also inspired by the search for expressive visual forms and vibrant dynamics in the works of early 20th century artists. Which, in turn, are associated with medieval art. At the same time, at the heart of my work is a person, his search for truth and a restless essence, enclosed within, invisible to others. I use a combination of wood and metal in my works as a contrast between two elements that show the severity of the conflict on a physical and emotional level.

Concepts and meanings

I’m Nikita/Onda, artist, art historian, poet and publicist. All my works are elements of a single conceptual story, which I tell with the help of paintings, objets d’art and texts. I explore models of human perception and communication in the conditions of an ultra-dynamic metropolis and oversaturation of information space. These conditions prevent empathic interaction between people, interfere with mutual understanding and sympathy. The category of the unknown, which eludes consciousness, is one of the central elements of my artistic research. I am sure that rethinking perception and communication with reality is necessary for the emergence of a more just and humane society, solving environmental problems – in general, for the survival and development of humanity. In my paintings, I creatively rework and develop the discoveries of neo-expressionism, modernism and postmodernism, drawing inspiration from early Christian and medieval art.

Our principles:

1) Co-creation of man, nature and time. We use ancient materials, underlining and creatively reworking the traces of time.

2) The concept of “second life” of an object: by changing the shape and the context, we change the destiny. Each of our works brings its own background into its new life.

3) We connect the language of figurative images, full of associations and metaphors (idea), and the “craft”, the non-verbal language of the material and old technologies (feeling). Working with traditional technologies and materials makes it possible to “slow down” the viewer, usually captured by the dynamics of the city and the information field, to offer him the experience of a contemplative perception of the work. We understand progress as a non-linear phenomenon, therefore we creatively process the experience of the past, transferring it to the current context.

4) Life is more important than an abstract principle, compassion is more important than dogma. Therefore, our themes are: reconfiguring methods of perception and communication, new ethics and its understanding, preordination and destiny – and stepping out of them.

Our works can live in interiors of different styles, they are perceived both together and separately, they can be inscribed both in private and public interiors (apartments, lofts, showrooms), and in exhibition spaces.

Limiting beliefs, the closed world. He has wings, but he doesn’t use them.

Chained Born,“Not free”series, Wood, paint on wood (acrylic), lacquer, metal, wax, 50 x 48 x 5 cm, Anastasia Pavlovskaya.
Chained, just born… A person is not free from the first minute of birth. It is understood that he, as a citizen of the country where he was born, already owes her: taxes, military service or life itself, if she is not very lucky and was born in a totalitarian state.
You change citizenship, but your roots and your baggage of well-known customs, songs and fairy tales remain with you forever.

Separation=connection,“Not free”series, Metal, paint, 60x26x10 cm, Alex & Anastasia Pavlovskaya.
Relationships between parents and children. First, the baby’s parents strive to be together for at least a few hours, then the teenager strives to get out of control … Balance and harmony arise only after the final separation – freedom strengthens love.

Bouquet, “Lu pènce” series, antique roof tiles, acrylic, varnish, metal, paint, wax on metal, 64 x 48 x 48 cm, Alex & Anastasia.
“Lu pènce” in the abruzzese dialect means “roof tiles”. In this series, we work with 200-250-year-old fragments of broken roof tiles to breathe new life into time-scratched pieces of Abruzzo’s precious clay. They protected the inhabitants of mountain villages from snow and heat, and saw their life. Rigid pieces of roof tiles have completely changed their fate: now they have become a bewitching sculpture in a modern interior. They look like an old mosaic, but under the glamorous painting they are just terracotta, simple, hard, severe, seen so much.

The tree, Old iron, bronze, oak, wax, 115x45x55 cm, Alex Pavlovsky.
The sculpture is made of old metal. This metal – a piece of agricultural machinery – has memorized its peasant background: a helper, a creator, a liberator from hard work under the scorching sun on the steep slopes of Abruzzo. Having become a sculpture, modifying form and context, it brings its energy to new life.
