Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life. Most of it was acquired during my travels. Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity. But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell. It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale. The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

I use metaphors like ‘ The Watchful Satan’ and ‘ Scrolling Down Gods’ when expressing my views on artificial intelligence and social media. Which metaphors would you use regarding the internet intrusion in human life? And what is your philosophical view on how most technology improvement seems to rather kick off chunks of people out of the board or invade their way of life changing it forever?

There is no ‘one way’ to use the internet. It reflects our lives. There are good things and really awful things. Things change in a social sense at a grindingly slow pace. In my internet bubble, our attitudes to Trans people in particular are at odds with what happens to trans people in the real world. This is also true of sex workers and people (immigrants and refugees) that live in Direct Provision in Ireland. Young men and women are dying at the hands of our health service from curable physical and mental ailments. Women are dying because cervical cancer is not caught early enough by the HSE, people are committing suicide because they are being discharged from mental wards. My internet algorithm reflects a lot of this pain and life experience back to me and when I am able to deal with it, I try to support the people who are suffering. Liking a tweet doesn’t really help a whole lot though. These are systemic issues.

If given a choice of rather going back in history or forward into the future; which time, place or event would you aim to witness, participate or die in? And why? Or if you choose instead to visit tomorrow, what would daily life look like? And who do you imagine yourself being?

–

I would go to Edith Wharton’s New York in the late 1800’s and dress exceptionally well and enjoy myself! Or maybe Anna Karenina’s Russia but perhaps without the overbearing men! I would just be wistful in a beautiful place and live vicariously through my children. I would love to be surrounded by snow for six months of the year. Also I am kind of interested in Eastern European food. My Dad is half German so I grew up on goulash, strudel and dumplings. It is hard to choose just one destination. I would also love to be in Berlin in the late eighties. The breadth of historical change that takes place in that city in only the last thirty years is really fascinating.

By and large we live collective lives, but artists see life a bit; well sometimes very different than others. I was a tech for a university for a while. Well, my experience with that field, I do say, troubles me: to be more clear, when the field, or some of its components, are set on helping the value and quality of the machine and forget how to interact with people, and value the machine over the people they come into contact with regularly, I have to play Pink Floyd, regularly, to balance my emotions, Radiohead, too. That journey of missing out on my education has encouraged me to study ludites, and try to save money for an unplug tattoo. Again, others smarter than me have already reported on this, by design, by design, it’s designed to keep you connected at all times, the profile, is a representation of AI, and the business, and the platform, want you there, sitting, not moving, mindfully scanning away its research, its development, all the while, self-serving, making life an obstacle to our wants harkons a philosophical mind smarter than me, in Kierkegard, teleologically, that professors tell me struggled philosophically with the concept of heaven, when people just wanted to bypass all the problems and just get to it without living, except there’s heaven in a convenient device that can fit in your pocket, while culture and other things of intrinsic value, just goes to the wayside. I compare the effect of typing into a search engine with scrying through a crystal ball.

Oh, gosh, oh gosh. I’d like to go back to prehistory. I’m aiming at reliving cave painting and celebrating female huntresses apart of hunting packs, instead of the female compartments the patriarchy, developed later on, or would want with which into force them (same compartments I speak out against), and to celebrate in that female strength. I’d like to see pass the pandemic tomorrow, people putting down clubs, warheads, guns, protecting each other, I would be much greyer then, I would like to sit by a stream, maybe die and come back as a fern tree, maybe animals would sleep next to me, birds could make nests in me, what birds are left. Maybe the air is cleaner to breathe. Perhaps, there’s a group out in front of me, testing the stream, working to protect it, and the ecosystem I’m a part of, maybe there’s camp outs where others learn about survival, and use some limbs I’ve dropped to create survival huts for the night, or there own artificial light well into the night by which they perform sketches and songs; maybe someone would sit ‘neath me and write a poem.

The Comfort of Art

–

I don’t write because I want to, not really. I kind of need to. I’ve been sick for a very long time, mentally ill. Finding balance in the last twelve years of my life has been nigh-on impossible. Highs and lows, crushing lows. College was a very chaotic time for me. I lost as many friends as I made, I drank too much, had horrible trips, slept with too many men. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t think that there was anything I could control. Apart from writing. Whether it was writing appointments in my multiple diaries, taking notes in lectures or journaling through pain and tears, writing somehow made me feel like I had control in what was a messy and painful existence. I’ve been “at my most well ever” for the last year now. With covid my life slowed down and I learned that I preferred life at a slower pace. I learned that I was allowed to live my life the way I was able to and the way that I wanted to. Slowly my love of art and culture, my creativity came back. It started slow, I watch beautiful films, Wes Anderson in particular, I walked in the West Cork countryside and when I was allowed I went to Kerry and wept at the beauty of the sea. I cycled a lot, I did workouts, I started watching YouTube. After the third lockdown I started going to art galleries. I noticed that art helped me, the alone time renewed me. My interests were returning. One day when I least expected it I wrote a poem, and then another. And here I am.

The Interview – Part 1

Which character flaw do you despise the most and how do you deal with these individuals during an unavoidable encounter?

–

I think the characteristic that I would find most repulsive in a character would be ‘entitlement’. Growing up with an English accent in a small townland in Cork where everyone plays Gaelic hurling and football, often made me feel like I was different. I was told my accent and my talent for English and my chronic shyness made me ‘posh’ when in fact I was just culturally different. When I went to university, I encountered people who were trying to find themselves and struggling. Some of them aired their pain in hurtful ways. For me that is the essence of entitlement.

Where do you find more turbulence when looking at your belief system? And how much influence, if any, has your art had in the way you navigate through these rough waters?

–

So, the turbulence is in the belief system itself: it’s always a riddle, it’s always on the minds of family members, on their TVs, on their cell phones. It’s on the minds of friends that struggle, it’s in the minds of those who interact with my art. They have all become the authority on what I’m supposed to believe, and while they’ll acknowledge evolution, overall, as a species, they’ll simultaneously refute my belief, deaf to me the next passing moment, just as fast as they reiterated their stance.

I’m not cool, or very popular, and society has made certain decisions when interacting with me, regularly. I mentioned I am a victim of molestation and rape, beliefs in themselves have been spawned for me out of turmoil necessarily to survive. The beliefs I have have made me troubled in deciding whether to go on a walk. Several artists I interact with on a regular basis have wound up beat up, in local establishments, and good on the staff that has been there at those times.

As I look at my own words I use, even in this interview I could find a number of words that could particularly trigger some individuals.

This topic intersects with my lifestyle choices: a happily married, omnisexual, Scotts-American male, who fancies socialism, wears his heart on his sleeve, and worries about many groups he might not represent in body, but in spirit. The songs “Relax” and “Land” come to mind. The former because of the refrain in wanting adult connections with other males when the area/society despises it, and the latter because Patti Smith somehow knew about me before I was born. The art has been necessary, um not for profit, mind you, but just to sustain life’s breath, a breath that can be exceptionally hard and critical towards folks sometimes.

Which character flaw do you despise the most and how you deal with these individuals during an unavoidable encounter?

–

Insensitivity: interacting with others, being social (such the challenge it was, even before isolation), forces me to look at who we all are; someone wiser than me wrote that the magic happens “in-between”, those spaces that aren’t labeled, in the “unknown”, what we may identify as nervous negatively might be actually anticipation; I won’t remember where to find that (won’t remember which book), I go out of my way to find the places where you can gain different perspective, this comes up at the beginning of poemcrazy; it came up recently in an Academy webinar where Joy Harjo was speaking on the importance of testimony, so I do try to find the value beyond the flaw, sadly, because of who i am: cerebrally, emotionally, and molestations and rape, I have to be mindful who I interact with, many people easily take advantage of my inner child, I love to play, so that, probably, explains a bit about my choices in art, but that child can easily be taken advantage of, has been in the past, and I have to be mindful of how trusting I am, although it does put me in dangerous positions, others may not often find themselves, which is unique, talking to people I may not have talked to, otherwise, it’s a very curious balancing act. I’m not afraid to experiment. Too, I have to be guarded. Most of the time I find, later on, in the early morning, alone, that the character flaws I thought I saw in someone all along turn out to be projections of my own.

Is the relationship between you (the artist) and your art a healthy one? Or artistic growth comes with a price, and if so, what is it?

–

Artistic growth, hmm: um, this stage of my development has been integral for accumulating the interior with emotion, the hard part, but anticipation in revision, in words, in form, that try to make friendships and bridges with others beyond borders, beyond skin color, and transcending technology and beliefs. The price is that at the end of the day I leave some individuals infuriated with me and some of my judgements, but that price has reminded me in reflection, when I am shut out, I am an adult, I am funny, I do have value, to try to find the words, most the time crushing silence, to live with each other even when they may want to shoot me, and I’m dead serious. I will not compromise on trying to find the Hesiodic manual to get through this complex of dehumanization and unkindnesses that stack up, and I will not accept being shut out, overall. I will persist. I won’t be a prophet in the process. Sometimes I wish, in jest/seriousness, we could ingest shrooms and connect in unity with one another, again. Though, I’ll admit, it’s idealistic, and its absurdity.

Describe the most joyful and/or the most painful artwork you ever created and why you qualified it as such.

Recent poems have been the most painful, confessionally (painful in their material covering themes that culturally are, for better, or worse, sidelined).

Where they do intersect with individuals is a challenge to identify: either the associations with past historic events that present problems imaginatively for individuals, especially challenging that they require research and recall (for instance, a persona piece in the voice of Fulvia to Mark Antony, when she is pushed out of Senate and in exodus to Greece with their children, in the form of a fictitious epistle, while he just lounges away indulging himself with Cleopatra). Some of it is challenging because of how much I shake, or emotion I might be trying to control in the form ‘neath a pen on the page (especially notate mourning and grief, many losses that have been informing music I’ve written, or poems) . This kind of applies to one of your later questions I’ll come back to… Challenging because of the heartache with current issues and events that can simultaneously put me at odds with some people I love (a family love, you can’t get rid of your family, but maybe you don’t spend as much time with those particular individuals). A mentor came down with dementia, a person who inspired me to love words, and the devastation in watching that talent and control for language fail is very teary eyed to convey at the moment. Health has been especially challenging during this group of poems that culminate the last, I don’t know, math’s not a skill I can apply strongly, several decades(???), and my life in between with tormentors and friends, some of them go back to 2008 or prior, analogously digging up cadavers that have gone into the metaphorical grave, while others ask me, “Why does this matter?” “Isn’t poetry dead?” “You don’t believe that, do you?” “Oh, you’re one of them!” Pick your witch hunt. People can be especially critical, especially with the internet. Did I mention diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, Degenerative Disk Disease? Particularly with the inherent male sex I have these diagnoses can put me, often, outside the social sphere most people inhabit, regularly, taboo realms that makes it especially difficult to identify those with whom I relate.
