Adele Mosonyi

Member of the Taylor Foundation and the Salon d’Automne (Mythes & Singularité)

I was born in the UK in 1955. My parents were musicians who met in Paris, my mother was from Lowestoft in Suffolk and my father was from Szombothely in Hungary. They immigrated to the US and settled in NYC, where I spent my entire childhood surrounded by musicians and artists. Modernist aesthetics was a key factor in my artistic education and is still highly inspirational in my work today.

After teenhood in the UK, I came to Paris to study Philosophy and History of Art at Nanterre University, followed by Drawing and Painting at the National Paris Fine Arts Academy. I have now been living and working in the Paris area for nearly 50 years. Although my early work tended to be more abstract or semi-figurative, colour was a central concern right from the start.

More recently my work has been centered around the representation of female figures borrowed from mythology or hybrid figures such as Caliban borrowed from Shakespeare’s Tempest. I love staging my characters in chromatic compositions that are telling a story. For me colour composition is similar to musical composition. I’ve been very sensitive to the musicality of colours since childhood and am still convinced that every single colour combination has its own particular rhythm and sonority which will enable the painting to vibrate and come to life. Together with the use of certain fundamental forms and symbols borrowed from primal arts, my characters can connect and converse with the viewer.
