Bondero

Bondero (Vadim Bondarenko, b. 1967, Baku) is a Ukrainian-Dutch visual artist based in Leiden, the Netherlands. Trained through eight years of formal art education, he developed his practice in Odessa before relocating to the Netherlands.

Over the past decade, his work has moved between contemporary landscape, chromatic architecture, still life, and staged photographic projects. Across these bodies of work, Bondero uses heightened color and carefully constructed spaces to explore desire, memory, leisure, and the fragile image of an ideal life.

His work has been presented internationally in exhibition contexts connected with the 58th Venice Biennale (2019), Red Dot Miami (2020 and 2023), and exhibitions in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Kyiv, Apeldoorn, and Odessa. His paintings and photographic works are held in private collections across Europe.

The Mediterranean Landscapes series explores the Mediterranean not as a specific geographical place, but as an imagined territory of light, color, and tranquility.

Whitewashed villas, open terraces, swimming pools, fragments of architecture, distant sea horizons, boats, and lush vegetation become elements of a visual language associated with summer and escape. Rather than documenting existing locations, I construct places from memory, observation, and imagination – landscapes that feel familiar, yet cannot be found on a map.

Architecture plays an important role in these works. Walls, windows, terraces, shadows, and areas of water divide the canvas into large planes of color, creating a balance between recognizable landscape and abstraction. Human presence is often suggested indirectly through an open door, a chair, a table, or a boat on the horizon.

Color is deliberately intensified. Turquoise water, warm ochres, pinks, yellows, deep blues, and Mediterranean greens transform everyday scenery into an idealized visual reality.

For me, the Mediterranean is less a destination than a state of mind: a place where time slows down, boundaries between interior and exterior disappear, and ordinary life temporarily gives way to light, space, and silence.
