Daniel Castonguay

Daniel is an awarded photographer from Montreal, Canada. He is among others, laureate of the Fine Art photo of the year 2019 at the prestigious Monovisions Photography Awards in London. He started photography in 1979. Living in a great city, Daniel was naturally driven to street photography and depicting the quotidian life in its simplest form. When he started in this field of photography, he worked accordingly to the established standards of the style and at a certain point; he got bored of not being able to illustrate the mood of the “moment”. In order to give a more authentic touch to his work, audacious and challenging the rules, he began to process his imagery to make it a little more mysterious. This had the effect of combining simple moments of life with his state of mind, ending up in a unique “creative street photography” style, hence the name of his series “Quotidian Life”.

As Daniel says, “Being a street photographer is above all playing a role in the urban life framework, contribute to its vivacity, its pace and almost belonging to a chaotic scenario. To me, street photography is more than a “picture making business“, it’s being part of a continuous theatrical sketch where I play the role of a silenced character.”

Prints Production

Images are distributed by Daniel Castonguay Studios (DCS) and processed in a laboratory established in Montreal for more than 30 years. Works are rendered on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Ultra Smooth Matt 308 g/m², 100% cotton, Fine Art archival paper. Prints are produced on a HP DesignJet Z9+ dr device, using genuine Hewlett-Packard pigmented inks.

Prints come in limited edition of 8 in size of 24×36 inches (60×90 cm), as well as a numbered edition of 1 Artist Proof (A/P), without subsequent reissues.

In compliance with the highest authentication standards of fine galleries and museums, each print in limited edition is numbered, signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity written in English or in French, printed on white cotton 300 g/m² paper. The certificate is characterized by the embossed DCS logo and comes with an imprinted serial number. The serial number also sits on the back of the work as well as an authentication “rubber stamp”. All inks in use are of archival grade and manuscripts written in graphite, on acid & lignin-free papers.

Duplicates of documents of authenticity are archived in the vault of the Daniel Castonguay Studios headquarters in Montreal, ensuring traceability and thus ward off counterfeiting in confirming the origin of the works.

Prints are carefully packed and shipped in a securely sealed dent-resistant box. In order to preserve archival characteristics, the paper and inks are protected by two sheets of archival grade glassine, all rolled on a rigid core of a 3-inch diameter, protected from moisture by a poly tubing and bubble wrapped prior to final packing. Prints are shipped worldwide.
