Anna Rotty

Anna lives in Oakland, CA. She has been part of the San Francisco Artists Studios Collective since 2017. Anna is a co-founder of Work in Progress Bay Area, an arts discussion and critique group geared to bring together individuals practicing activism through creative outlets and promoting collaboration and support through the arts. She has recently exhibited at Flowers Gallery, Incline Gallery, SF Camerawork and UMass Amherst. Her work has been featured online with Juxtapoz, Root Division and Humble Arts Foundation.

In recent work I explore the experience of contemplation in solitude. I attempt to understand the difficulty of turning oneself inward in reflection in our current world of constant stimulation. I am curious if it is possible to see all our human multitudes in the vulnerable presence of one another, and aim to demonstrate the limitations and opportunities found in dark space for introspection. I imagine drifting off to the unconscious or to another state of being. Perhaps light can penetrate more clearly in a void. These photographs are a mix of alternative processes including cyanotype and lumen printing, made from digital negatives or direct contact printing, exposed in sunlight, and developed in water. The cyanotypes have been toned from their original blue color to a deep black.
