“A tormented consciousness”

What characterizes Dominique Laude’s painting is first of all the obsessive presence of the body.

Deformed body, supporting body, place of the confrontation of love and death. Body tended, fallen, tortured. Body torn apart, destructured, contorted, abandoned, lost in space, on the verge of metamorphosis.

The drawing draws its inspiration from expressionism and the great classics, from their excessiveness. Excess in the way of upsetting natural forms, of limiting colors to shades of red, ochre, black and white, of disfiguring faces in a kind of painful delirium, abolishes all rules, substitutes hallucination for sensitive perception. The instinctive revolt of the body to the ordering reason.

The body becomes protean, a set of fragments kneadable like clay but as volatile as ashes.

Body as a support in which elements confront and tear each other apart, reflecting an aspiration to recreate natural laws according to the laws of imagination.

The creative act is then similar to a bold attempt to wrest the body from chaos, from the abyss of the “informal”, from the chaos of humanity.
