The Many Facets Of Fear

Written by  Carioca Da Gema

Fear is an emotional natural response. It tells the self that adversity is on the way.  We fear things or events that can alter our survival or aspects of our lives.  From our perspective we cannot physically or emotionally overcome this uneasiness and our bodies kick in defense mode by feeling afraid.

Many times, we fear things that only exist in our minds, but nonetheless cause real pain.

We fear things we know we cannot control, such as the wrath of God, natural disasters, and death.

Losing a job, a home, or a loved one, are common fears.

But there are other fears that put our beliefs, morals, and ambitions at risk instead of threatening us physically or emotionally.

Art is an unparalleled conductor of history.  Through sculptures, paintings, music, and writings, art has participated in every step of human history.

Feared by the powerful elites and governments, art hangs around for a long time.  One can see their social struggles in art expression done decades before their birth. Poems, music, movies, and photographs are portable mediums, essential to carry on a message that can reach people regardless of their physical presence.  Mobile depictions of art make the oppressor afraid, very afraid.

Regardless of its borders one dictator is just like the next, and the search for freedom has a single target.

OUR CONCEPT

Written By Joelcy Kay – Curator

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY offers that personal experience as the individual has the opportunity to buy the art from the creator and by doing so a new event to remember is born. When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

WHY DISPLAY YOUR ART AT THE NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY?

The gallery is designed to connect the art seekers and collectors with artists directly. We offer artists a COMMISSION FREE / CONTRACT FREE online platform to sell their creations and engage with their clients using portfolio pages that are engaging with large images and a dramatic black background.

Destination Surrealistic Imagination

Written by Jezzie G

Paint and canvas,

pencils and water,

four simple things,

four keys to me.

Happiness reflected

in bright colours.

The sad times

come in dark hues.

The canvas

doesn’t question me.

Just goes with

the brush flow.

From canvas, I have

no need to hide.

No pretence,

no bottling inside.

A friend

with no voice.

Yet can find

such powerful imagery.

Brush strokes

gentle and sensual

are as much part of me

as the harsh vigorous dabs.

A thousand words

a picture speaks,

consenting me with

the freedom to be.

Fine delicate lines

that lead the eye

on a journey

from reality.

Destination surrealistic imagination

“These forces I feel that make the world around me seem unimportant. This need I have to communicate while no one cares to listen. I would certainly choose to go without proper nourishment and shelter in order to continue carrying on with my art.”

“This aching sensation in my mind; issues I must express, ideas I must let out. The concealed rage deep inside my surroundings that no one dares to talk about, I must release all through my art, my untouchable messenger”

Artists have always been targeted during wars/revolutions around the world and throughout history.  From the symbolism of an object an artist can strategically insert into their artwork, to the metaphors in lyrics or poetry, or to the ingredients selected for a gastronomic feast, they all can carry a message.  That’s the power of art; that is what the establishment fears.

300.O0003-Mariana-San-Martin
Mariana San Martin – ON VIEW

Conceiving art is also a personal experience, as artists very often use their own suffering, memories and hopes in order to produce their pieces and express themselves.

But what happens when the very essence of art, the labor of art, is invaded by technology?

The layers of creation, the mental and physical exhaustion of building a piece of self that will later belong to someone else, that is being eroded by innovations that makes producing these limbs easier and viewership wider.

Production and artist’s expression has been in a tussle since the beginning as the patrons want to make money while the artist’s goal is to create.

300.Mininal Concept
Angel Estevez – ON VIEW

It must be a difficult choice, especially for the traditional artists.  These individuals, with a mission of maintaining the ancient ways are confronted with the choice of large cultural exposure at the cost of lesser traditional ways during production.  Higher exposure will undoubtedly raise the demand; stimulating awareness to the cultural heritage he or she is aiming to preserve.  Is the easing technology bringing to (producing and promoting) artworks worth the water down version of the final vehicle carrying the message one wants to reveal?

Beauty | The Messenger

Alessandra Tarnowski Mastrogiovanni

Written By Joelcy Kay – Curator

In the center of the Sistine Chapel I cried.

At the Giza Plateau in the saddle of an Arabian horse I froze.

Art and history, envisioned and painted by Michelangelo 500 years ago and built by ancient men from millennia before Christ, come crashing into my heart and soul, invading my quiet space.  Loaded with beauty, making my heart race, my palms sweat, and changing me forever.

Buba Arabuli ON VIEW

The appearance of beauty is unique to humans while that rush that floods our gut, when we see beauty is universal.

I have a soft spot for the old and rustic.  From old homes, to the craftsmanship of ancient vases, to the smell and feel of an old book, they all speak beauty to me.

The places where we see beauty varies with the individual.

The beauty of an old farm’s kitchen is in the ability to blend the past with the present as it welcomes one to stay, feel, smell and taste life trapped within its walls; which can be enjoyable or overwhelming, but indisputably loaded with history.  But there’s also beauty on that slick looking kitchen on the front page of ‘Here’s Your New Kitchen’ magazine.

Edgar Invoker
ON VIEW

With modern life come changes in the concept of what’s beautiful, and what beauty is carrying.

Looking at antique furniture I question the lack of comfort, art, beauty and technology.  These handmade relics of past generations are for many intoxicating with beauty.  The beauty of the past and the beauty found on things that are no longer built.  The beauty of simplicity, that hundreds of years later still engage the viewer.

Technology made these daily objects of art more useful while the expectation of beauty as a carrier of one’s personality, tradition and history eroded.

Mikheil Arbolishvili
ON VIEW

But did beauty as we knew vanished or evolved into modern and more efficient artistic tools that still promote us to live with art and beautiful things?

Tech people use words like ‘beautiful code’, while chefs’ brag about their ‘beautiful ingredients’, beauty is unique and universal.

Beauty is also primal, as we very often navigate back to our roots, not ethnically but as race, the human race in search of beauty.

We all know what a sunset and a sunrise looks like, all the components and colors of this visual beauty are etched onto our minds; and yet when the opportunity arises we will over and over stand to attention and watch it roll.

In The Mind Of An Artist | THE INTERVIEW

Introducing THE INTERVIEW

‘In The Mind Of An Artist’ aims to uncover the artistic mind, the perspective of individuals living under the influence of art.   By and large we live collective lives, but artists see life a bit; well sometimes very different than others.  As some seem to float from one artwork to another; others are deeply encrusted in their work making it difficult to catch that ride offered by the world around them, creating realities in which one person (the artist) must navigate in order to survive in society.  If you are an artist and this speaks to you, please contact me if you like to share your story.

Through these articles artists will share their intimate views. Talking about how their perspectives changed as they trapped themselves in the cobwebs of art.

By design ‘In The Mind Of An Artist’ will not contain any images of artwork, biography, profile, lists of exhibitions, books or the artist’s creative process.

The goal here is to give the artist a chance to pause from the creation of art for a moment and explore the self.

THE INTERVIEW

This series also has an interview component.  You may choose to answer all, some or none of the questions below.

1) Please describe the most joyful and/or the most painful artwork you ever created and why you qualified it as such. Please note that we are not using images.

2) Which character flaw do you despise the most and how you deal with these individuals during an unavoidable encounter?

3) Where do you find more turbulence when looking at your belief system?  And how much influence, if any, has your art had in the way you navigate through these rough waters?

4) Is the relationship between you (the artist) and your art a healthy one? Or artistic growth comes with a price, and if so, what is it?

5) I use metaphors like ‘ The Watchful Satan’ and  ‘ Scrolling Down Gods’ when expressing my views on artificial intelligence and social media.  Which metaphors would you use regarding the internet intrusion in human life? And what is your philosophical view on how most technology improvement seems to rather kick off chunks of people out of the board or invade their way of life changing it forever?

6)If given a choice of rather going back in history or forward into the future; which time, place or event would you aim to witness, participate or die in? And why? Or if you choose instead to visit tomorrow, what would daily life look like? And who you imagine yourself being?

To submit your article, answers,  get an invitation to participate, or for more information on this series please email jo@edgeofhumanity.com .

Street Art

‘Bergen, the Street Art Capital of Norway’

Photography & Text By Jeremiah Gilbert

Bergen is considered to be the street art capital of Norway. Famed street artist Banksy visited the city in 2000 and inspired many to start creating street art. In 2011, Bergen’s city council launched a plan of action for street art in Bergen to ensure that “Bergen will lead the fashion for street art as an expression both in Norway and Scandinavia.” Today over 200 pieces of street art, including murals, are dotted throughout the city.

With so much street art in a relatively small city, some pieces can still be tricky to spot. Many are small, tucked away along narrow roads. Others require one to either look up or behind them. However, the viewer is rewarded for their attentiveness as artists interpret and comment on the world around them, often using satire and asking questions.

For a long time, Norway fought against street art. Murals and graffiti were removed as soon as they appeared, and street artists were punished with heavy fines. Bergen’s decision to promote rather than crack down on the art form has had an overall positive outcome for both the city’s artists and residents. Companies and cultural institutions around the city now invest in decorating their walls with this form of art, and museums have had several street art exhibitions, adding to the city’s artistic status.

The Intrinsic Place Of Photographs In Our Lives

Editor & Curator – Edge of Humanity Magazine

Curator – NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY

The expectations and curiosity of waiting for a roll of film to develop rather days or hours depending on how old you are was mostly eliminated by the digital era.  But the feeling and desire of looking at these photographs bearing the weight of the stories it tells have not.

Natural disasters’ documentaries are gut wrenching to watch as most of us cannot imagine enduring such a loss.  These touching historical images are full of personal tiny rescues on the faces of people finding precious belongs left behind by complete destruction. These treasures very often are photographs; they tell stories of their past lives, depicting people they love, and loved ones that are gone, with tremendous emotional charge.

Humans have a way to keep somethings primal, and photographs are one of these relics, as we today take more images than we can count, and our brains or hearts still keep the flame of excitement burning to see the next shot.

Although photography alone can tell a good part of the story, there are other factors that artists often overlook.

During their search for the best light or the truth, photographers sweat in the heat and shrivel in the cold.  They smell the stench and enjoy the aroma of flowers. They are welcomed and frowned upon. The experiences of being there and the desire to tell the story carried on by pride for their labor of love and expectations that when finalized, the work will be fair to the subject and make a difference, can be overwhelming.

A fresh eye is necessary to organize the delivery of that material, in a fashion that is easy to follow, and yet has impact, by holding the spectators’ attention to the message one wishes to convey. This is when a curator comes into place. Unattached, the curator selects images aiming to promote engagement and consequently readers’ awareness.

By Andrew Abballe

In The Mind Of An Artist’ aims to uncover the artistic mind, the perspective of individuals living under the influence of art.

This series of articles, written by artists is about the artist’s way of processing and reacting to events in their lives.  These can be tangible communal events or struggles of philosophical and psychological nature.

This series also has an interview component.

NO MIDDLEMAN is a boutique ART GALLERY; individuals browsing our archives and portfolio pages are relaxed, not pressured to sign up, agree with website terms, or maneuvering out of pop-up windows.
