Under A Grudging Sun By Alex Webb depicts Haiti in the late 80s.

It is a dramatic; and yet raw contrast of thick colors and the Haitian people’s dark complexion, which is in many images, depicted as a silhouette.

My eyes wander endless through these images that seem to recycle the stories every inch of the way. Images of daily life are organic, full of truth and saturated by vibrant colors.

Most images have landscape orientation and occupy 1/3 of the page, there are also many diptychs, all depicting scenes of daily life where color and silhouette mimic waves, moving in and out of sand with an enchanting rhythm.

You can feel the tension in the images showing scenes of social injustice/stability, violence, dead bodies, suffering and poverty, as if the deep colors and shadows were heating up.

My favorites:

The image on page 19 has a motion picture feel, as a little guy (child) in the middle of the image takes a pick looking at the photographer.

On Page 29 patterns meet daily life in an artistic depiction of a (almost) silhouette of a man wearing a hat.  In the background men labor on top of a wood roof. The patterns on the roof and window run horizontally while the ones on the walls and fence run vertically. It looks like a painting.

On page 75 the eyes of the man and woman standing in front of a blue and pink wall tells the story of their lives in a very emotional portrait.

Under a Grudging Sun By Alex Webb is a must have for people interested in social issues, history and the Caribbean.  For the monochrome buffs go ahead and play dangerously, you will not be disappointed. And for the photography book collector this book is a must have.

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

And like steam escaping a boiling pot their faces and posture, the way they walk and how fast they move, all tell the world their story of the day. When these moments are captured in images, they stay frozen in time waiting for a viewer to bring it back to life. The City @ Night

Awakened by the stench present when the garbage truck stopped by my window, I decided to get up and go out into the night.

The buildings’ lights reflect colors on the freshly washed streets.  Some people pass by in cars and on bicycles, others walking.  Some still in a hurry at this hour while others are waiting for the sun to send them home.

As I lose and find myself in the city’s dark alleys all night long, I noticed a pattern of clusters .  The locals congregate in open establishments that cater to the night walkers.  Silently, patrons come and go. I wandered for hours then I stopped for a bite to eat and drink and smoked cigarettes.

Even though the city is resting from the heavy weight it carries during the day; life continuous on piercing the boundaries of darkness and brightness.  Eagerly she provides for the scattered souls that roam at night.

At this time, the city becomes edgy when glim promotes mystery.

‘Bergen, the Street Art Capital of Norway’

Bergen is considered to be the street art capital of Norway. Famed street artist Banksy visited the city in 2000 and inspired many to start creating street art. In 2011, Bergen’s city council launched a plan of action for street art in Bergen to ensure that “Bergen will lead the fashion for street art as an expression both in Norway and Scandinavia.” Today over 200 pieces of street art, including murals, are dotted throughout the city.

With so much street art in a relatively small city, some pieces can still be tricky to spot. Many are small, tucked away along narrow roads. Others require one to either look up or behind them. However, the viewer is rewarded for their attentiveness as artists interpret and comment on the world around them, often using satire and asking questions.

For a long time, Norway fought against street art. Murals and graffiti were removed as soon as they appeared, and street artists were punished with heavy fines. Bergen’s decision to promote rather than crack down on the art form has had an overall positive outcome for both the city’s artists and residents. Companies and cultural institutions around the city now invest in decorating their walls with this form of art, and museums have had several street art exhibitions, adding to the city’s artistic status.

The expectations and curiosity of waiting for a roll of film to develop rather days or hours depending on how old you are was mostly eliminated by the digital era.  But the feeling and desire of looking at these photographs bearing the weight of the stories it tells have not.

Natural disasters’ documentaries are gut wrenching to watch as most of us cannot imagine enduring such a loss.  These touching historical images are full of personal tiny rescues on the faces of people finding precious belongs left behind by complete destruction. These treasures very often are photographs; they tell stories of their past lives, depicting people they love, and loved ones that are gone, with tremendous emotional charge.

As a street photographer, I take an observational view of how our present circumstances govern our behavior individually and in crowds.  Progressively, we appear to interact with each other only on a synthetic basis.  We attempt to mass connect with the aid of modern technology, but in so doing pay less attention to individual connection. I think this is compounded by the increasingly designed environment we inhabit.  The codes we see, hear and read within it impact upon our behavioral processes and ultimately isolate us.
Old Bailey
In developing scenes, I try to choose architectural backgrounds against which I can display separated figures, distributing or choreographing them across the frame. The architecture becomes incidental to a scene or situation that may or may not evolve within it. I tend to look for sites or places where people pass through without congregating.
Moor
To begin with, if there is one figure or two or more figures who are positioned apart, I’ll wait until they’re joined by others in the hope that they’ll create a spatial and enigmatic dialogue. The figures often take on the look of stressed automatons acting out prescribed scenes.  At a time when it’s becoming harder to discern what is human and what isn’t, their isolation from each other serves to emphasize an unreal and machine-like formality.  These isolated figures don’t have to be interesting in themselves, so long as they create a narrative tension with others.
Wembley Park
It’s important that there is an element of movement from the figures.  Everything must appear to be changing and in flux at the same time as retaining a spatial integrity. In an age wracked with anxiety and uncertainty, there is still a challenge to inject a boisterous creativity into a streetscape of robotic conformity.

OUR CONCEPT

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY offers that personal experience as the individual has the opportunity to buy the art from the creator and by doing so a new event to remember is born. When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

Behind their sunglasses, inside their winter coats, and in their pockets, people hurry concealing their anxiety, the expectations for where they are going, and the disappointment they just faced.  Scattered, catching a subway, crossing the street, walking a few city blocks or even a mile, all in public view without their daily mask.

And like steam escaping a boiling pot their faces and posture, the way they walk and how fast they move, all tell the world their story of the day. When these moments are captured in images, they stay frozen in time waiting for a viewer to bring it back to life. In these depictions, human expressions are raw, unattended, and lost in a mix of the city’s vibe.
