IN THE MIND OF AN ARTIST

The Interview – Part 1

Please describe the most joyful and/or the most painful

artwork you ever created and why you qualified it as such?

bar

Answered By Melissa LaFontaine

The most painful piece of art I ever created was never finished, which fits quite well into the concept and essence of the thing anyways. It was a watercolor, big, 18 x 24 if I remember right. I don’t particularly care for watercolor beyond a tool for sketches and gesture making, so this was pushing me way out of my comfort zone with both its size and need for detail. It was to be part of my senior collection which had a theme exploring memories of my father (who was absent and alcoholic until I was aged 20 when he miraculously sobered and returned to sanity) and more broadly my relationship with myself as a daughter.

The image was a homestead. It was a peaceful, landscaped setting. Idyllic in only the way a city girl who grew up with a single mom who never had enough money, could think of as idyllic. A big house sat off in the background with swathes of pretty green grasses and country blue skies. The foreground held a large tree under which a man was sitting, leaning his back on the tree, legs extended with a handgun on the ground next to him.

I’ve always hated anything overtly violent or aggressive. It disturbed me that the gun had shown up in the work almost without my realizing it. It wasn’t planned, I didn’t sketch it in, it was just suddenly there. Now I was looking at some cowboy that was either preparing suicide, murder or protection. Such contrast to the idyll behind it. When it dawned on me that’s about all I understood of men, in this obscure protector/villain dichotomy, it hurt too much to finish. Or maybe that was just the excuse I grabbed to get out of having to spend another 12 hours to bring it to completion and therefore work on gaining a deeper understanding of men beyond this socially induced dichotomy. That seems like another layer to the same story. My art tends to go that way, bleeding the reality of my subconscious motivations in a way that becomes part of the statement that no one ever quite understands.

About ‘In The Mind Of An Artist’

‘In The Mind Of An Artist’ aims to uncover the artistic mind, the perspective of individuals living under the influence of art.   By and large we live collective lives, but artists see life a bit; well sometimes very different than others.  As some seem to float from one artwork to another; others are deeply encrusted in their work making it difficult to catch that ride offered by the world around them, creating realities in which one person (the artist) must navigate in order to survive in society.  If you are an artist and this speaks to you, please contact me if you like to share your story.

This series of articles, written by artists is about the artist’s way of processing and reacting to events in their lives.  These can be tangible communal events or struggles of philosophical and psychological nature.

Through these articles artists will share their intimate views. Talking about how their perspectives changed as they trapped themselves in the cobwebs of art.

By design ‘In The Mind Of An Artist’ will not contain any images of artwork, biography, profile, lists of exhibitions, books or the artist’s creative process.

The goal here is to give the artist a chance to pause from the creation of art for a moment and explore the self.

Interviews will also be included in this series.

OUR CONCEPT

Written By Joelcy Kay – Curator

Every piece of art, crafts, or textiles, hanging on my walls or ceiling tells a tiny passage of my life.  Most of it was acquired during my travels.  Many of these treasures are damaged whether because they were broken on arrival, as the pieces were tightly stuffed into my backpack, or weathered by the unforgiving Florida tropical humidity.  But in the end, they are my precious processions and they are part of the stories I tell.  It feels good to have rugs hanging from the ceiling, masks on the walls, and drinking my morning coffee thinking of the mugs’ tale.  The point here is that art has a lot to offer each one of us; ART IS VERY PERSONAL!

The NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY offers that personal experience as the individual has the opportunity to buy the art from the creator and by doing so a new event to remember is born. When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

WHY DISPLAY YOUR ART AT THE NO MIDDLEMAN ART GALLERY?

The gallery is designed to connect the art seekers and collectors with artists directly. We offer artists a COMMISSION FREE / CONTRACT FREE online platform to sell their creations and engage with their clients using portfolio pages that are engaging with large images and a dramatic black background.

IN THE MIND OF AN ARTIST“…a good artist, plays with the Universe on everyone else’s behalf.”

Written By Melissa LaFontaine

“Art is my cosmos”

I make art to make the invisible, visible and to rebel against the status quo of the material realm, stagnant, decaying, almost inevitably predictable beast that it is.

There has always been a deep well of loneliness in me. I have had too many near death experiences to exist as a drone, sleepwalking through my movements. Not that I haven’t tried. Risk and reward are calculated differently now though, and others seem to sense this. The extent of emotional valence is broader, more encompassing, more easily accessed in unlimited quantities.

To feel is to know you are alive. To notice things, proof that you can feel. I have always had a knack, a preference, for noticing things that others don’t. It has always felt slightly wasteful to pay my attention where others are already paying theirs. My feelings are finely tuned and take copious amounts of intoxicants to suppress (which have almost never been worth it). In order for both the things I notice and my own inner truth to be validated, I create out of that space that most people cannot bear to feel and so offer a taste, a communion or medicine from it. An offering that allows the unseen, the unsaid and the unmet, to be met.

Nothing is ever quite good enough and simultaneously it is all too exquisite to bear, this is the dichotomous pendulum from which I swing. Perfection is the elusive substance we sense, we experience, we create yet never hold. We seem to mourn this loss continuously, without acknowledgment, as a species. I think this is what sets us apart. It is most certainly what makes creating art necessary.

An awareness of this loss, all of the suffering that contributes to it, and the perpetual dissociation it causes can be bridged into something meaningful with only slight effort, it tends to ask only for acknowledgement. That has been my struggle as an artist and as a person. There has been a lifelong quest to take whatever tools are available and use them to throw ideas and impressions against the walls of humanity’s psyche. To correct errors, to make better. I am tenacious in my desire to expose imagination as the key to eternity. As I mature as a person and my skill grows as an artist, the tools improve, the delivery becomes more refined, but the impetus remains the same.

There is something else happening hereit is not always the case that 2+2=4. There is also ambience and mood and method. I feel an unrelenting drive to urge the sentient nature of reality closer into a tantric experience of life that never settles for safe or good enough or neutral unless they are solely in response to the grotesque or repulsive and therefore, necessary. To be an artist is to live like a mystic and commit to never letting emotion die into oblivion.

Because artistry has been so intertwined with spirituality in my personal cosmos, I’ve always had the hardest time with the intersection between capitalism and artmaking. The products of expressionistic creativity seem like entities that transcend valuation. I wish artists could exist in the netherspace of magic where all our needs are met so giving could occur without need to compromise for sake of reward, (which isn’t ever really reward but scraps meant to forego the decaying of time). This makes the whole rest of life very difficult.

Life becomes art and art becomes breath. It becomes dance. It becomes temptation. How far can you push the envelope where the edges of possibility enfold us before a new center erupts right under your feet and you never find your way back to the other you, to the linear thinkers of your yesterday? Not as far as you’d think, but that’s the game an artist, a good artist, plays with the Universe on everyone else’s behalf.

I feel a lonely ache, an intelligence and potential within me that never seems able to gain agreement for It’s existence. It has never been capable of an esteemed position of silent witnessing while the body goes about some ordinary life. New frontiers must constantly be created, explored and exhausted. I’ve lived the life of a wanderer, a monk, an anthropologist.

From where there is a felt lack of love and validation, I find myself compelled to create, to rail against the ignorance that would seek to nullify or erase me, my center, my perspective. I’ve taken all of the prophesies and religious dogma, both spiritual and intellectual and thrown them into a pot which I stir and stir, sip and stir. I meditate, I contemplate, I question. Sometimes I scoop up a ladle of the thoughts that waft up from this brew and spread it across a canvas to record a new interpretation.

I find a great release that is too often met with frustration. Frustration that the audience is too busy to see, the nuance is buried too deeply to be useful, or because it is met with indifference due to it being only relevant fifty years in the past or fifty years in the future. That frustration compels a new endeavor, a new work, a refining of the message. Stir, stir, sip, marinate, begin again.

Being an artist is like being a psychedelic plant in human form. Sometimes we get outlawed and people have no idea why we’ve been labeled dangerous. They avoid us as they avoid themselves. But if they gain enough courage and attention to relate, they’ll find that missing number that rewrites all their equations. When you get to do that, you get to feel human for a bit. A real live, loved and honored part of the human family.

Everything we see has been created. The degree to which we enjoy it is directly related to the seeming care with which it has been assembled, whether by water, wind, plant or animal. In my most frenzied artistic states, I create art that marks time, that portrays the truth behind whatever illusions are being exported the loudest in culture. Art isn’t just my cosmos, it’s everyone’s cosmos, only some people don’t realize it yet. Half the fun in making art is showing people that. The other half is the moment you see them remember some private thought, they believed was theirs alone, recognizably expressed in your work. This undeniable proof of inner connectedness passes their brow, if only momentarily and a grander world feels just a little more tangible in its wake.

Although photography alone can tell a good part of the story, there are other factors that artists often overlook.

During their search for the best light or the truth, photographers sweat in the heat and shrivel in the cold.  They smell the stench and enjoy the aroma of flowers. They are welcomed and frowned upon. The experiences of being there and the desire to tell the story carried on by pride for their labor of love and expectations that when finalized, the work will be fair to the subject and make a difference, can be overwhelming.

A fresh eye is necessary to organize the delivery of that material, in a fashion that is easy to follow, and yet has impact, by holding the spectators’ attention to the message one wishes to convey. This is when a curator comes into place. Unattached, the curator selects images aiming to promote engagement and consequently readers’ awareness.

Behind their sunglasses, inside their winter coats, and in their pockets, people hurry concealing their anxiety, the expectations for where they are going, and the disappointment they just faced.  Scattered, catching a subway, crossing the street, walking a few city blocks or even a mile, all in public view without their daily mask.

NANCY WOOD

And like steam escaping a boiling pot their faces and posture, the way they walk and how fast they move, all tell the world their story of the day. When these moments are captured in images, they stay frozen in time waiting for a viewer to bring it back to life. In these depictions, human expressions are raw, unattended, and lost in a mix of the city’s vibe.

Why I Still Photograph With Film

Amelia Johannsen
On View

I love photographing with film.  In today’s high tech digital world I’m a dinosaur. When I place a roll of film in the camera it is as though I’m performing a ritualistic act. The process starts by taking the film out of the plastic canister and holding the roll in my hands. It’s a nice comforting feeling.

Stelios Mousarris
On View

The plastic shell case is industrial looking and reminds me of something that is solid and is built to last. The roll of film is tangible in my hands, not digital bits and pieces of photo’s floating around someplace inside a camera, computer or phones.

Mary Johnson
On View

Using a film camera is a personal experience that brings photography to its most simplistic form and connects the photographer, the camera and the film all as one unit.  I proceed to load the film into the camera, snap the door shut and press the shutter button a couple of times listening as the camera rapidly moves the film strip across the teeth.

TENGIZ SEPIASHVILI (SEPO)
On View

The film is locked and loaded and ready to go. In my hands, I hold the camera and feel an inner satisfaction that I’m well equipped. The roll of film is my blank canvas. Not too much fiddling with electronic gadgets. The film camera is ease of operation so the artist can focus on creativity and individual vision not the equipment.  A transcendental experience!

Holding a slide or print between my fingers is a very warm feeling. I store all my images in specialized storage boxes, then place the boxes wrapped in heavy duty plastic bags inside a freezer. With a temperature at around negative ten degrees, the images will last 100’s of years. Yes, I can also make a print from a digital file, but having each individual picture, in its hard format, is priceless to me. There are no worries of the photo being deleted on my hard drive or lost in cyberspace. I also have no concerns about technology changing

When you hang the work of art on your wall there is a story behind it; an artist you now know and follow.  And instead of the usual “I purchased this at “WWW(BIG BIG ART STORE).COM”  the connection enriches the emotional value of your art piece.

Art Subject | The City @ Night

Daniel Castonguay
Now On View

Awakened by the stench present when the garbage truck stopped by my window, I decided to get up and go out into the night.

The buildings’ lights reflect colors on the freshly washed streets.  Some people pass by in cars and on bicycles, others walking.  Some still in a hurry at this hour while others are waiting for the sun to send them home.

As I lose and find myself in the city’s dark alleys all night long, I noticed a pattern of clusters .  The locals congregate in open establishments that cater to the night walkers.  Silently, patrons come and go. I wandered for hours then I stopped for a bite to eat and drink and smoked cigarettes.

Lara Kantardjian
Now On View

Even though the city is resting from the heavy weight it carries during the day; life continuous on piercing the boundaries of darkness and brightness.  Eagerly she provides for the scattered souls that roam at night.

At this time, the city becomes edgy when glim promotes mystery.

Art Is My Mistress

SVETOSLAV STOYANOV
Portfolio On View

Art is my lover and my friend. My art and I have a relationship that can be best described as an emotional all-consuming, dominating, promiscuous rollercoaster. Some will look at this relationship as being only one sided, but that observation would not at all be accurate. Art drives me to reach out and open myself up to not only the world around me, but also to dig deep inside of my being to find suppressed nuggets of creativity.

GEOFFREY ANSEL AGRONS
Portfolio On View

When I let go of all inhibitions, I allow my imagination to take over and unshackle the non-analytical side of my brain so that I can explore my inner dark side as an artist. What do I mean by exploring my inner dark side of my brain? This is the part of my mind that is complicatedly multi-layered and difficult to reach because it is buried in the subterranean portion of my psyche. Think of a dense web that is coiled and covered in a thick gooey type of molasses that can only be penetrated by an excavator that has no trepidation.

DR. AKIRA TAKAUE
Portfolio On View

How do I scale down into the murky creative cavernous portion of my brain? I relinquish complete control of my body, mind and spirit to my art. When focusing on my art, I just let go and do not care about embarrassment and what others may think of me being that square peg in a round hole of society and just create. I have no fear of failure, or no thoughts of achieving greatness. Anxiety, fear, and ego are all left at the door. I’m not robotic!  I’m a living breathing organism, that is floating along looking downward, on a non-opinionated universe, that allows complete freedom of expression.  This may sound like fantasy.  However, when I completely submit to art my goddess, free flowing creativity that is bottled up inside my soul is released.  This is reality.
